Do you have a fear of failure?
In this video, I talk about our fear of failure.
A fear of failure is very real to many people.
But, what actually is failure?
What does failure mean to you?
We each have different definitions of what that means to us.
For one person it can be not doing very well in an interview, exam or test. For others it may not be accomplishing certain things in their life.
Our family, friends, co-workers, bosses, teachers and mentors all have a huge part to play in the role models that they are for us.
Often it is from those closest to us, that we learn the hardest and biggest lessons.
Have you ever had someone say to you, “Don’t you fail me,” or, “You need to do really well at school, otherwise you won’t get very far in life?”
This sets up expectations in us that we think we need to meet and with that comes a world of pressure, stress and anxiety.
When we don’t meet the expectations that are put on us, we feel that we are a failure.
But how about looking at it like this?
Failure is not actually failure.
There is no such thing as failure.
Shift your mindset and think of it in this way. We each have lessons to learn in our life and when things don’t work out, that doesn’t automatically mean that was a failure.
It was only something that we needed to learn and often we learn what not to do.
This has a huge impact to how we view our achievements in life.
Have you ever noticed that there are patterns in your life that you seem to be repeating?
For example, you seem to attract the same ‘type’ of person into your life. You get the same type of problem in work situations, either with your boss or co-workers.
From now on, look at that as a red flag and ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?”
When coaching with my clients, we deep dive into what are thoughts and beliefs are and where they come from. Once you know that you can take the next steps to creating your new life and proactively do something about shifting that pattern. You will have learnt your lesson and you will be able to move on to bigger and better things.
Let go of expectations that have been put onto you by yourself or others and do the best that you can, whatever task you set yourself.
And with that, you will no longer entertain the concept of being a failure.
