6 Tips to Embracing Change
Change is a normal part of life. The butterfly is a caterpillar before it breaks out of its cocoon. Autumn becomes winter, turns into spring, then summer and then back to autumn again. We have birth, life, death.
Nature accepts change because it knows that it is part of its state of being. It adapts. There will always be hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. The earth recovers, as do we, when we rebuild.
Life is in a constant state of flux.
So why do we fear change?
In a nutshell, we are afraid of the unknown.
We worry if we will be okay. Will we have enough money? Will we be safe? Will my new boss be supportive?
Rather than fearing what could be or may be, what if we consider the benefits of embracing change?
By looking at change as a good thing, our life becomes one of opportunities.
When we consider that a new job can bring us a promotion, a better salary, working closer to home, work/life balance etc, we are able to view it as potential positives rather than negatives.
Relationship or single? If we are in a relationship that has run its course, perhaps we are fearful of being on our own. Or, afraid that we won’t find love again.
Staying within our comfort zone doesn’t allow us to grow. We need change because it enables us go further in our lives, to achieve more and to feel fulfilled within ourselves.
Formulating a plan will enable us to cope much better with change.
My business coaching clients have the tools to adapt to change so that they have greater resilience when they encounter bumps in the road. In my work as a motivational speaker, I instil a sense of purpose in the audience so that they can adapt change and transformation to their own lives.
Below are my 6 steps for embracing change that can accelerate our lives.
Here’s how can we embrace change.
- Acceptance
Often, when change is upon us, we resist. Therefore, the first step in this process is accepting that change is happening. Once we have done that we are able to move forward, even if we are not completely happy with it.
- Take stock, evaluate.
Before doing anything, we need to consider, do we actually want change?
So often, we say that we do, but do we? Maybe someone else is trying to get us to make changes, but within ourselves, we don’t really want to. For example, if someone says to us, “You should give up smoking.” It’s true, perhaps we should give up smoking for our own health. But if we don’t want to, it is never going to happen.
No matter what anyone says, it won’t have an impact unless you want it.
Delve deep within yourself and reflect on what is important to you.
- What is the best that can happen?
Looking at the future of your own scenario or situation, think about, what is the best that can happen?
When looking at our options from this perspective, we are able to see the positives that might be coming our way. It enables us to go forward with a positive mindset and feeling encouraged to take action into our goals.
- What is the worst that can happen?
By looking also at the worst case scenario, we are able to factor in contingencies. Bear in mind though, that most of the time these are highly unlikely to happen.
When we take these things into account, we are addressing many of our fears and we come to realize that they are not actually realistic.
In any case, it helps us to navigate the ‘what could happen’ scenario ahead of time and gives us confidence that, if they may happen, we can do something about it.
- Visualize it
When we visualize ourselves creating our goals and making positive changes in our lives, it becomes easier to do it.
Create a quiet space for yourself with no interruptions. Close your eyes and focus only on yourself. Take yourself into a relaxed state and start to imagine all the things that you want to create in your life.
See it, hear it, feel it. Become of who you might be around you in your future, what is going on around you? Can you hear any sounds? What are people saying? What are you saying? How does this make you feel?
Once we can ‘see’ ourselves in our future, it becomes easier to implement what we need to, to make it happen. It also takes away the fear because, we know that we can do it, as we’ve already seen it in our mind.
- Take a leap of faith
In steps 1 -2 you’ve determined that firstly, you want to make changes, and you’ve looked at the good in step 3 and not so good in step 4. In step 5 you were able to visualize what you want to do. Now it’s time to take a leap of faith.
This is the action phase of change.
It’s where we step into our new lives by embracing our goals. It’s where we embrace change.
Start with one thing that you want to change, implement that successfully and then do it for other goals.
With each time, we feel that our confidence grows a bit more, and what we once thought was not possible, now is.
